A successful
rescue on a suicide attempt near the gates of an exclusive school for boys in
Magsaysay Village in La Paz, Iloilo City on June 1, 2012. It was called through
ICER radio at around 12:15pm by a Federation fire volunteer who just happens to
pass that area. Both Iloilo City Emergency Responders and Federation Fire
proceeded on the scene, equip with rope rescue equipments, tower truck, rescue truck
and ambulance. The male patient was in the early 20’s and had problem with his
love life. Our 2nd in command climb the tree were the patient is
attempting suicide. More than 15 feet from the ground was estimated. The patient
had a rope around his neck and threatens to jump if any rescuers are coming
closer to him. Base on the experienced and veteran rope rescue and advance EMT
on the scene, the responsive to any questions by a suicidal patient had
positive outcome. If the patient is not in any verbal or emotional response the
patient is much closer to a real suicide. Sir Darwin, an EMT-Advance and Rope 1
rescue, attempt to established communication and was successful. After few
minutes from the time he climb up, he convinces the patient to go down without
any problems. The team also secures the patient on the ground and quickly
assesses and brought to the nearest hospital for medical check-up. Also the guardian
of the patient was also assessed and given first aid at the height of the event
leading to a hypertension form the situation. Both were brought by the same ambulance
on to the same hospital. (ebsp)
