Iloilo Anti-Dengue Operation


The population of Iloilo City has increased for the past decades as well as the outbreak. This incident was prevented only if sufficient knowledge regarding the cause of the disease was made available to the people.

The City Government of Iloilo with the partnership and support of Filipino Chinese Business Club take further steps against the mosquito problem and how to control the danger it could bring. The Crisis Risk Reduction Management Office / Iloilo City Emergency Responder have extended its program and responsibility on Anti Dengue Campaign as the one to spearhead to take measures to control the above problem. The office waste no time to instantly materialized barangay Anti Dengue Campaign.


The first Barangay who benefited the above program was Barangay San Jose, City Proper last November 12, 2011 headed b Brgy. Captain Antonio Coo. It is located in City district with 400 populations, most houses are commonly made of light materials and the area is highly congested. Stagnant canals and water are visible in the area and present a very good breeding ground for mosquitoes.The City Government of Iloilo with the partnership and support of Filipino Chinese Business Club take further steps against the mosquito

On November 26, 2011 the second barangay was Barangay Salvacion Habog-Habog, Molo headed by Brgy. Captain Nestor Munoz. It is located on Molo District, geographical location near river bed with 2300 population, most houses are commonly made of light materials with few concrete houses, the area is highly congested, several household are raising poultry animals for extra income, stagnant canals and water are visible in the area and highly susceptible for mosquito breeding ground.

On the same date the third recipient was Barangay Katilingban, headed by Barangay Captain Jose Maria Cartel. It is also located in Molo District with 1207 population; houses are also made up of light materials. Molo II Elementary School is located in this area. Stagnant canals and water are visible in the area and said to be a good breeding ground for mosquitoes.

On December 11, 2011, there was a reported case of Dengue on Barangay Lapuz Norte. Immediate action was done, partial investigation and planning when to schedule the mist spraying. December 21 & 22, 2012 was the agreed schedule. The team dispatch in the office at about 8:00am and move forward the location. Barangay officials guide the team to where the stagnant waters and areas where large amount of water can be seen. The operation lasted 2 days with a struggle of which some of the Barangay officials were not very supportive. After the spraying the team advises the barangays officials as well as the residents to maintain the cleanliness in the community and be safety conscious.


January 14, 15, 16 & 19, 2012, the third date of the anti-dengue operation. Location is Brgy. Balantang, Jaro, Iloilo City, with a total land area of 156 hectares, number of household is almost 1,000 with 1503 families. The operation lasted for 4 days. The Barangay includes 1 subdivision named Lawaan Subdivision with 8 streets, 2 primary schools, Balantang Elementary School and Sacred Heart Lawaan.

During the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival, the Anti Dengue Operation Team of Iloilo City also shared their contribution. The City Mayor of Iloilo City, Hon. Jed Patrick Mabilog requested the team to spray all the festival judging and billeting areas for the safety of the entire contingent coming from different towns and municipalities, visitors and spectators to the said festival. Area includes Bakhaw Elementary School, A. Mabini Elementary School, Iloilo National High School, Iloilo Freedom Grandstand, Iloilo Capitol Grounds, Corner Luna St. and Bonifacio Drive, Lapaz fronting Gaisano City Mall and Iloilo Sports Complex. The Operation was done during late afternoon and night of the following dates January 18, 19 & 20, 2012.

On February 7- 10, 2012, schedule area for Mist Spraying is Barangay Camalig, Jaro, Iloilo City, with the leadership of Brgy. Captain Nestor Luma. Total land Area is 144 hectares, with 488 households and almost a thousand of families living in the said barangays. The Operation lasted for four days due to bad weather condition.

Barangay Cubay, Jaro, Iloilo City was scheduled Febuary 11, 14, 15, & 16, 2012. It is the third largest Barangay in Jaro District with 81 hectares land area, under the leadership of Brgy. Captain Renato Villegas. The barangays includes 7 Private Subdivisions that excludes the St. Joseph Seminary, two Primary schools, one private the Philippine American School and public Cubay Elementary School.

This coming June is the opening of the school year of 2012 the Iloilo City College in Molo, Iloilo City will be accepting students. So the good mayor Hon. Jed Patrick Mabilog requested to spray the newly build school in contribution and preparation. The team meticulously checks and spray the whole building even the immediate surroundings of the school.

Last barangay scheduled this Febuary was Brgy. South Baluarte, Molo, Iloilo City with a reported fatal case of dengue which killed a 6 year old child who is not a resident of the said barangays but only relatives. They ask the barangays officials for financial support. In response to this, the anti dengue operation team responded to the area and planned together with the barangays officials for the immediate action. 25 of February, 2012, the team dispatch in the area at 9:00am and lasted for four hours. The barangay official were very thankful for the immediate response of the city to eradicate if not to lessen the spread of Dengue H fever cases here in the city of Iloilo.

The Anti Dengue team is headed by Engr. Jose G. Papa, Officer in Charge, Darwin Joemil G. Papa - EMT-A, Medical Response Officer, and Aicila Ayn M. PleƱago – EMT-B, Operations Officer. During the operation the Anti Dengue team thoroughly conducted eradication of mosquito on foot walks, irrigation canals, school classroom, houses, storage area, stagnant canals and water deposits and especially suspected mosquito breeding ground, however, the team is careful not to

spray the chemicals on household pets, poultry animals, and drinking water and especially on the people living on that area.

Indeed, the operation was successful because most residents if not all of the mentioned barangays showed their full support and cooperation during the operation and we will continue it until all the 180 barangays of Iloilo City will be finished mist spraying for anti dengue. Above all, the continued support of the City Government headed by the City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and sincere cooperation of its people is the key in achieving the goal of this program.
